Watering 101: A Foolproof Guide

Overwatering kills far more houseplants than underwatering. Here's how to get it right every single time.

The Golden Rule

Water the plant, not the schedule. Ignore calendar reminders — check the soil instead.

The Finger Test

Push your finger 1–2 inches into the soil. If it's moist, wait. If it's dry, water deeply until it flows from the drainage hole.

Signs of Overwatering

Yellow leaves (especially lower ones)
Mushy, soft stem base
Mould on soil surface
Gnats flying around the pot (they breed in wet soil)
Leaves that droop despite wet soil

Signs of Underwatering

Dry, crispy leaf edges
Leaves curling inward
Soil pulling away from pot edges
Plant wilting despite watering (check if roots are circling the pot — time to repot)

How to Water Properly

Always water until it drains from the bottom — this ensures roots in the lower pot get moisture and prevents salt build-up. Empty saucers after 30 minutes so roots don't sit in water.

Seasonal Adjustments

Plants grow slower in winter and during peak monsoon — they need less water. In hot Indian summers, you may need to water small pots daily. Adjust based on how quickly the soil dries, not the season alone.
