Repotting is one of the most satisfying plant care tasks — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's everything you need to know.
When to Repot
Choose the Right New Pot
Go up only one size — 2 inches (5cm) wider diameter. Too large a pot holds excess moisture and causes root rot. Ensure drainage holes are present.
The Repotting Process
Step 1: Water 24 hours before repotting. Moist soil holds root ball together; dry soil crumbles.
Step 2: Gently tip the pot, supporting the stem base. Ease the root ball out — don't yank.
Step 3: Shake off old soil (about 1/3rd). Inspect roots: trim any black, mushy, or circling roots with clean scissors.
Step 4: Add fresh potting mix to the new pot. Place the plant so the base of the stem sits 1 inch below the pot rim.
Step 5: Fill sides with soil, pressing gently. Water thoroughly.
After Repotting Care
Keep the plant in bright shade for 1–2 weeks. Avoid fertilising for 4–6 weeks — new potting mix has nutrients. Some leaf droop is normal as the plant adjusts.
